Sensitivity is not an issue

To be sensitive is not to be a deviation from the norm. Being a highly sensitive person is innate, natural, and normal, and is not something that has to be fixed, changed, or reduced.

[With respect to Dr. Elaine Aaron] I felt like [HSP] didn’t quite capture the joy and the beauty of our sensitivity, and then on the other side since I’m in the health world, the term “sensitive” is used commonly to describe the state of dysfunction or disease … [as if] sensitivities are things you want to get rid of.

Jessi Michel Agadoni

For Jessi, as a highly sensitive person with a sensitive body that she had to learn how to take care of through specialists, she wanted to create a term that would give HSPs (and their bodies) a category that would allow them access to the correct care.

She came up with the term “natural sensitive” to describe someone sensitive from birth as opposed to having developed a sensitivity over time.

Even natural sensitives have developed sensitivities … there’s a journey for us to in that we get to uncover what is our natural sensitivity versus what is a developed sensitivity.

Natural sensitivities versus developed sensitivities

There is no clear box between natural sensitivities and developed ones, but there are some common examples, such as reading the room.

Most highly sensitive people can walk into a room and understand the unspoken dynamics almost immediately because they can sense the feelings within the space. This is a natural sensitivity of most HSP.

However, if you walk into a room and you feel strong hypervigilance that feels like you cannot let go of a fear to please people or to maintain a sense of peace. This is a trauma response, and that is a developed sensitivity.

That’s part of the healing which is relaxing and releasing that rigidity because we’ve been so conditioned to solve and fix ourselves because from day one, we’ve been told that something’s wrong.

Jessi Michel Agadoni

The healthiest thing that you can do is to relax into yourself. Allow yourself to begin not assuming that something is wrong and that if something is unhealthy that it will be released over time. Let go of some of that, “I need to fix myself”, mentality.

Jessi’s advice to other highly sensitive people

Reconnect with your body! Many highly sensitive people are out of touch with their physical selves because they might have (incorrectly) been taught to distrust their bodies due to their higher levels of sensitivity.

This is the number one … root cause issue that can develop into expressions, either emotionally or physically, that are unhealthy or inauthentic for us, and that is [that] we were taught from day one to distrust our body and distrust ourselves.

Jessi Michel Agadoni

Reconnecting with your body is a powerful and necessary way to improve your healing. To know how you feel, what you feel, where it is felt.

Take your symptoms seriously instead of pushing them away, and seek medical attention when you know it is needed.

So, if we can heal that [bodily connection] and learn how to actually trust ourselves and trust what our body tells us, that will reorient our entire life.
